It can be pretty awful to take a look at the state of your driveway when it’s all worn down and hasn’t been worked on in years (or even decades!). In many cases, the way your driveway looks says a lot about your home. Matter of fact, a lot of people will likely make first impressions based on your driveway. With this in mind, we here at Mondo EX want to talk all about driveway grading/excavation services and how they work.
Why Get Them Done?
There are a number of different driveways that you can get done for your property. Each one comes with their own benefits, and it will mainly depend on your personal preferences + your properties dimensions. One of the main issues people come across when it comes to driveways is improper water drainage. A lot of people will get a driveway grade done to fix this issue, as pools of water on your driveway can be a nuisance, but be even more dangerous when it freezes into ice in the winter.
What’s The Ideal Grade for Your Driveway?
Figuring out the ideal grade for your driveway will greatly depend on the size of your driveway. This means measuring the length to find the perfect elevation change. In order to prevent standing water & erosion issues, it is best to have the slope at a minimum of 2% and a maximum of 25%. In general, this can be quite daunting to have to measure out & calculate, but when you hire a company to do all the difficult work for you you don’t have to worry about doing any of that. The right excavation professionals will have all of the right tools to properly get your driveway to the right grade level.
Driveway Types
Gravel
A gravel driveway takes a lot more consideration than people initially assume. A lot of people think you just need the material, but there are a lot of steps that are involved in this driveway type, including:
- Removing topsoil
- Compacting any soil underneath
- Putting multiple layers of varying gravel sizes on with proper compaction every layer
- Ensuring the proper slope in order for effective drainage and minimal maintenance
Asphalt
In order to go through with an asphalt driveway, you need to make sure there is an extremely stable foundation underneath. If you do not, this type of driveway won’t last for very long and start to fall apart at the seams. In the majority of cases, a base will consist of crushed stone so the driveway can properly drain any water and reduce heaving. Depending on the climate where your home is located, this sub layer will vary in thickness.
